According to what they are playing. There are a lot of games out there that challenges your mind and that is good for youths.

Depends on the games. Many games can expand the intellect. Sports not only are good for the body, but train the mind in coordinating with the body and can help with social skills and improve confidence (though this can backfire).
Video games played to excess are bad both mentally and physically, though just about anything done to excess is. A violent game can instill or build on negative aspects of the psyche, but a well adjusted child who already knows right from wrong will not be at risk.

many games are good for young peoples mental abilities. The Myst series for example. I have played them from the age of 10 and I ended up with an IQ of 137. but sales of games such as these are and a very rapid decline. i believe that it can be blamed on schools. but how can that be? aren't schools where kids go to be mentally stimulated? well no, not really, schools have become a place where adults regurgitate facts at children, hopping something will stick. kids are no longer challenged to learn, they are forced to memorize lists of facts rather than figure things out for them selves. this is leading to a generation that can't think for themselves. they then turn to games that really don't require them to think. that compounds the problem that was set into motion by the school system.

depend on what games their playing and environment their living plus they influence for other's. mostly, games don't have bad impact on youth if they playing with a right games, like learning stuff games.
unless, you see them playing battlefield or counter-strike with online capability and their age are below 12. that will impact a lot.
