These Southern "gentlemen" had numerous illegitimate children with their slaves. How can someone have children with a person you berate? Why would someone continue on this power trip unless they were devoid of any decency?

The real question is why do people admire them if they were downright evil?

Washington's character was impeccible. Upon his death in 1799, he freed all his slaves, well before 1863 and the Emancipation Proclamation. I have seen the "slave" quarters at his home at Mount Vernon, and their quarters were better than most colonialists' homes back in the 18th century. I STRONGLY OPPOSE SLAVERY and also man's inhumanity to man, but in terms of treatment they were treated as an investment and therefore well-treated. He also wrote many letters to his wife during the Revolutionary War, all endearing and passionate.

Jefferson's wife died before he had relations with his mistress. If it wasn't for him and his ideals the principals of democratic rule may have been misplaced by another royal family in the US. Many countries throughout the world have modeled their own constitutions after his Declaration of Independence. The question of slavery is definitely immoral, but isn't immorality commonplace in today's world? Not a wiser man ever occupied the White House as Jefferson. President Kennedy made a comment at a White House dinner that had international nobel winners, leaders of industry, poets, scholars, scientists, and actors. He said that that gathering was so lofty and gifted one that had ever visited Washington with the exception of when Jefferson dined alone.

As for Franklin, his marriage was in trouble before he was appointed Ambassador to the Court of St. James. He also served as an envoy to France. He was an ardent foe against slavery. While he may have had many encounters, he was a principled man, an inventer, a great intellectual.

I'd take my forebears any day over the likes of Mao tse-tung, Hitler, Stalin, Bush, Idi Amin, or Castro.
