All fish die for a reason, be it old age related or environment related.

If it's old age related then well done, there is nothing more you could have done. But if it's environment related you should try your best to find out the cause so that it doesn't happen again. You can learn much from reading books and internet, but you will learn most when you have your hands wet and many, even those so call expert, failed often before they got it right.

So soldiers on my friend :)

Your fishtank needs a specific balance of bacteria in the water to support life, it is a bad idea to put fish into a brand new tank until it has been running for a few weeks. Also avoid adding too much replacement water at a time, and allow the chlorine to evaporate before you add any water to the tank. Too much food, an improper temperature in your tank, and stres can also traumatisze and kill your fish.
If your fish is newly bought it is also possible that it was sick or brought a disease from the petstore. This could also make your other fish sick.

Overcrowding is also bad for your fishtank. The general rule is one inch of fish per gallon.

Fish don't die for no reason. There is not information to answer with any certainty, but 9 times out of 10, sudden deaths of aquarium fish are due to toxins in the water.
