* Don't water your lawn excessively. When it's waterlogged, it may turn yellow and develop fungus and diseases. Oxygen and mineral uptake may be restricted on heavy clay soils. Too much watering can also lead to thatch and fertilizer leaching.

* Check your municipality to see if watering restrictions are in effect.

* Avoid mowing and unnecessary traffic on your lawn when the lawn is dry or dormant.

* Don't cut your lawn too short. Set the blade on your lawn mower to cut no lower than 6-8 cm so that the roots are shaded and better able to hold water.

* Aerate your lawn once a year in the early spring or fall to improve water penetration. Afterwards, topdress by applying a thin layer (max. 15 mm) of organic material and rake to distribute evenly. You can overseed after this to help thicken the lawn.

* A thick, vigorous lawn is the best prevention against weed invasions and can better withstand heat and dryness. A healthy lawn needs nutrients, such as nitrogen. Application rates, sources and timing will depend on many factors including soil type. As a rule, a healthy lawn with good soil needs about ½ kg of nitrogen per 100 sq. m. of lawn area every year. Leave grass clippings on the lawn to return nitrogen to the lawn, and reduce moisture loss.

1 Newly seeded or sodded lawns have greater water demands.
2 Actual water requirements depend on individual conditions, such as soil type.

There are several reasons. Lack of water, mowing the lawn too short (if you're blades on the lawn mower are too low, you can heighten the blades.) It's best to cut your lawn a little on the high side so it looks like plush velvet instead of scalping it so you won't have to mow it as often. You can go to any garden place and ask advice as to what nutrients your lawn needs.
If you are a person that loves beautiful green lawns around your home and gardens, then in the spring go to your local hardware store and get a mulching tool that you can rake the lawn with good and hard (there are mulching tools that will also fit onto your lawn mower.) Go to your hardware store or garden center for this. This takes up all the dead grass. There is also a tool (can't remember the name of it) that punches tiny holes in your lawn and will let the new grass breath. Then find a good fertilizer for your lawn. If your weather in your State is particularly dry you should water at least 3 - 4 times a week. If you are on water restrictions, don't miss one!
Even though the above is a lot of work the outcome is worth every bit of it. By cutting your lawn too short you are actually ruining it. Leaving it a little longer and cutting it more often is best and don't forget that fertilizer and water.

The grass is probably turning yellow because of the lack of water and when you mow it, you cut it too short and it dries out. Animals doing their business on the lawn doesn't hurt it, it is fertiliser. What do you think potting soil is made of? There is some poo mixed in. That is why it helps the grass to grow taller, healthier, and greener.

Overwater and lack of sunlight are both reasonable answers, but do any animals pee or poo in your yard? This kills grass. Think of the neighbors animals too.
