Anti-viruses don't prevent outside intrusion of computers. They just keep viruses at bay. You require a strong firewall to prevent unauthorised access to your computer. I will recommend using Comodo, a free to use fully featured firewall. You can get it from http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/
Also, an anti-spyware with real-protection is required. If you have genuine WindowsXP, then go to Microsoft's website to download Windows Defender. After downloading it, go to its Tools > Options and tick 'Use Real Protection'. But if your Windows is not genuine, you can use Spyware Terminator as a good alternative. http://www.spywareterminator.com/

Caution: Firewalls and protection shields may seem pesky, if you don't know how to use them. So, better go through the detailed Help menu to get some good idea.

And yes, you require an anti-virus, of course. If you have got no anti-virus, then download this free one:
AVG: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5#avg-anti-virus-free

Here are some security tips:
1.Never use more than one anti-virus or firewall. There is a good possibility that they will fight each other. However, you can use as many anti-spywares as you wish.
2.Always keep the real time scanning/resident shield of your anti-virus and any one of your anti-spyware active.
3.Keep all your security software updated, and scan your computer for spyware every 1 week and for viruses every 2 weeks

There are many programs out there and everyone has there favorites. I have tried a few different ones and right now I am having great success with Trend Micro anti-virus. I had Norton and it did OK. I have found Trend to be more reliable and less intrusive on my computer. Norton tends to hog and bog.

Sometimes i think people don't read very close. If you have a virus that has blocked all attempts at downloading anything that might delete it, If the virus had either destroyed the driver for your CD drive then you have only 2 ways of going. You can download a half dozen programs to a thumb drive from another computer, Update them, run them on yours, OR, Reformat/reload windows. Me, I wouldn't play with it. If it's in that bad of shape you can have it reloaded much quicker than you can sit for hrs trying to get it clean. Lesson one, Never keep anything on your computer. Always transfer everything to a thumb drive or external hard drive. That way you have copies of everything important to you somewhere else. You get a bug, Reload your OS and keep going. A lot less headache that way. Just plain old common sense.

ZoneAlarm.

I'm using it from last 2-3 years without any problem. Zonealarm security suite is a antivirus, anti spyware and firewall as well. So it is a complete sulotion in one.

Personally i don't prefer Norton just because it is heavy on system resourses. It hogs more RAM and disk space.

norton 2007 is the old reliable....

good at detecting - not great at removing
CA (Computer ASsoc.) is really good
AVG is OK

McAfee and Norton are the most popular - but are SERIOUS RESOURCE HOGS

Goto Download.com and see what everyone else is using....

I am using Windows Live OneCare - and cant be happier...

The most reliable is called Black Ice and its @ a hardware level and is about $1000 - (for companies)

Just be smart - keep it up to date and dont open crap youre not sure about and either AVG, Kaspersky, or Norton will be fine

I prefer ZoneAlarm Security Suite.. it has the firewall, virus scanner, and spyware scanner...

I have a link to them on my web page listed below but I'm not sure how much it sells for anymore (I've upgraded a few times and it costs less to upgrade).
