My friend is very honest and didn't know she was doing anything wrong. She thought the items had been clearanced. They made her sign a paper that said she would pay back the differnece. I told her to return them. She is very upset that people thinks she stole and is afraid if she returns them she will look guilty. I don't agree. She didn't mark the items wrong and someone else sold them to her. I told her it is best to return the items. What do you think? I want to go with her for moral support but I want to see what someone else thinks.

I would return them and refuse to sign. I would demand an apology for being slandered. She should speak to a lawyer. That's just wrong and very inappropriate of an employer unless they have some proof. The person who should be reprimanded is the one who marked them down, If they did it without authorization.

It is both illegal and immoral to profit on an error. In a court action, the judge would order restitution.
Tell her to pay up the difference or return the goods. At least she'll be able to sleep at night knowing she did the right thing.

If she is an honest, upstanding person, then enough people will know that. If she has a pattern of these mistakes, then....

If that had happened to me.. I would NOT have signed anything saying that I would pay the difference and I would have quit when they asked me to sign it.
