I think we've got bigger things to worry about. Adopting the metric system doesn't even make the top 100 things America needs to do list.

As a graduate student in the sciences I use the metric system everyday, and I definitely think its about time America adopted the metric system. However there are a lot of steps that need to be taken first. I know we have tried ot expose young Americans to the system in grade school, but after 5th grade you never see it again. We need to start pushing the system more in the schools, as well as in everyday living. I think eventually everyone will become compatible with the knowledge of the system, but try convincing you grandparents you are going to pick them up 2 liters of milk instead of a half gallon. Americans are just too stuck in their ways(a bit of arrogance i suppose). The other hard part is adapting corporations. Could you imagine the assembly line changes that would need to take place in order for 2 liters of milk to be poured as opposed to the current 1.89? Not to mention the need for a larger container. If they decide not to change any of the assembly, they are still going to charge you for a full 2 liters, so in essence the consumer ends up getting the short end. If someone can come up with a quick way of fixing this, other than the 1000 year track we are on, let us know.

spot the 12 yr old.

um, quite honestly, it doesnt matter. I am in australia, and we r metric. by the time u r an adult u should know both. i do, it is a bit frustrating being an engineer, but therer are so many different units being used, it doesnt really matter. USA seems to like doing everything they can to be different, ( just look at tom cruise) so why change now.
