They still play an important role with some of the people who didn't grow up with the Internet and for some people like me (< 25-years-old) who like flipping through pages and clipping the Sunday coupons.

Of course, I use the online versions of most newspapers these days (except for the Sunday edition) since it's basically the same except without the paper.

I think they still do but it is a dying medium. I believe this started when papers started merging. Now there are maybe three news conglomerates and they all have the same biases. In newspapers' "good times", there were generally several newspapers in a city, each with their own bias. A person could get a rounded view by buying several papers. With only one bias and reporters being trained in this bias from day 1, people have increasingly turned to non-newspaper sources on the Internet so they can get all sides of a story (this, IMO, is a very good thing). Hopefully, no governments will be able to invade the Internet to control its contents like other media sources.
