I just bought a used 1996 Dodge Avenger, but since it is my first car I do not know how to go about getting it on the road. It has a rejected inspection sticker due to loud exhaust, but problem was fixed. Do I need to inspect firsts or register? Or do I have to buy insurance? Car will pass insurance just dont know where to go or what to do first. Please help me out I need to get it going before I go back to college.

you need all 3 things. get insurance squared away and register the car. then go get it inspected.

You need to get it registered, safetied, insured and plated (in that order). You may also need an emissions test depending on where you live.

You don't need a safety inspection to register the car, but if you don't have one, it will be registered as "unfit" meaning you legally own it, but it is not legal to drive (you can get this changed once you pass inspection). That's why it's best to have it safetied beforehand - saves you making 2 trips (and possibly money) to the registration place.

First things first, depending on what state you are in, you must get the vehicle insured to drive it. But they will ask for your registration, or Bill of Sale when you get it insured. Best thing to start with is D.M.V., they can get you started in the right direction, and give you a temporary operating permit, while you get the inspection and insurance and you will still be able to use the car to get these tasks completed.

In Michigan, we do not need stickers. There would not be as much tax dollars if they made us have them. We do have to have insurance. It seems as though you would need the inspection first. Just call your Secretary of States office (license bureau) and ask them.
