pj is right it was Iran not Iraq. pj also asked some good questions. she had no reason not to trust her husband. they had been married for over 10 years. he was a successful and respected doctor. that had a healthy relationship. it was after the exposure to his family that everything changed. i really loved the movie sally field gave an excellent performance. she did everything as best as she could. she knew if she left her daughter that she would never see her again and would be sentencing her to a life of submissiveness with no freedom. i think it is an inspiring movie that shows the deep bond of mother and child and the will to survive

Rememeber that there are two sides to every story. One of my oldest friends married an Iraqi and the last last time they were there (about four years ago) she said her nerves were totally shot, not from the people, from the government. She has visited Iraq off and on since she was in her early 20's and like many, many 3rd world countries, most of her husbands relatives were dying to be sponsored and come over to the US. She always talks about how beautiful some parts of the country are and how she had always been treated with the utmost respect and love. I wonder if that is because her husband was educated and it seems as though the family in the movie was not. Also, my daughter and son-in-law were in Morocco for an extended 'hippie version' of a vacation (meaning no tours or 5 star hotels) and they raved about the hospitality of the people. They have traveled all over the world and always tell us that it's not Americans that other folks don't care for, but our government. Just a thought...

Well, I can't really remember the movie that much, but i did read the book. It's a true story, and i think like all nook to film movies, they left a lot out. Her husband was actually an american doctor, and they were together I think nearly ten years. All that time he had adapted the american way of life, and was a devoted, loving father. It wasn't until they got to Iran (was that the country??) that he changed. I don't know if anyone would do much different, if you fell in love with someone, who had obviously proved himself to be such a good husband, why wouldn't you trust him? When she did try to flee, I think she did the best she could, even an American friend she met dobbed her in for trying to escape. Shouldn't the question be more what COULD she have done better??

I can't think of anything that could have been different. She did exactly as I would have done. It's easier to answer this question if you're a parent.

i think i would probably handle it similair. she was stuck between a rock and a hard place without any options and had to fend for herself. she did what was best for her and her daughter. she had to be an independent woman but not let anyone know she was being independent.
