Joe Sakic! As was said before he really is a pure class act! He is amazing to watch on the ice and his records speak for themselves! He's no solely responsible but he has captained a team from last place to being a honest contender in a tough division!
EZC You are correct. He is the first NHL player to record 100 points in a season while playing for a last place team. That would be the 1989-90 Nords where he recorded 102 points and then did the same thing the following year with 109 points.

I live in Pittsburgh and i have been going to hockey games for 15yrs now. Since I can't choose Mario I will have to go with the young guy Crosby. This kid is some one you have to watch in person. No matter if you like him or hate him, if you are at a game and he is playing you can see his skill. Every night he does something to make you go Holy **** did he just really do that. Yes he is young and doesn't compare to some of the other players that have been mention but he doesn't compare yet. Wait until 15 years from know and the same question is asked. The question will read other then Super Mario, the Great One, Alex the Great, or Crosby who is the best. You might be able to put in Malkin later on.

i honestly cant say, there are so many great ones. guys like sakic, yzerman, bourque, and kariya bring a quiet grace to the game. physical presence, guys like scott stevens and in his earlier days theo fleury remind us that this is a sport full of testosterone, and every so often, you get guys who can do both, like peter forsberg. since i live in the dc area, most people would expect me to say ovechkin (that goal he scored last year while he was on his back was insane). now, im just a twenty one year old kid, so there are players of the past i have yet to see, and of course, players of the future i have yet to see (which is why im reluctant to say crosby or ovechkin, because ten years ago we'd be having the same discussion about bure and lindros), and i am usually one to go for the forgotten stars, like cam neely, pat lafontaine, jari kurri, teemu selanne, and even alexander mogilny, but if i had to choose one, id go with a guy who showed pure excellence day in and day out, maybe not the flashiest guy ever, but one of, if not the best to play his position, a guy who i saw (from a gazzillion rows up) break the all time wins record, patrick roy.

I want to go with Joe Sakic. He is my definition of a hockey player. He's a great leader, extremely skilled while still remaining an honest, hard working guy. This will sound bizarre if you look at what I just said about my definition of a hockey player, but I've always liked Pavel Bure. He's not a team player, or a leader, or a hard working honest guy. But nobody could move like him. I swear he was cheating, I don't know how but no body has THAT much control!

#87 Pittsburg Penguings -- Sidney Crosby
I have never seen a player handle the puck like this 19 year-old kid. He makes top-notch professional defenseman look like they were on the ice with no skates. Behind the back passes, between the leg passes and dekes,.... Is this Hockey or Basketball? He has the on-ice drive to become the most respected, quality super-star, and to make the Penguins a Stanley Cup winner again. I can count 5 goals that he has scored when he was on his knees, back, or stomach in the 120 games that he has played. 10 more years of this, and the entire Hockey world should all agree.

Not including Gretzky or Lemieux...
The best goalie - Hasek
The best leader - Messier (with Stevie Y a close second)
The best passer - Oates
The best goal scorer - Bossy (with Brett Hull a close second)
The best offensive defenceman - Coffey
The best defensive defenceman - Langway
The best defensive forward - Gainey
The best faceoff artist - Jarvis
The best fighter - Probert
The fastest skater - Pavel Bure
The biggest disapointment for this hype - Lindros
The best player overall - Messier. Why? Out of all the players I have seen play in their prime, he's the first person I would want on my team outside of Gretzky and Lemieux.

O - Mark Messier. The entire package.
D - Paul Coffee. Skate Like the wind, great first pass, hands and scoring touch like the best forwards. The numbers, and Stanley Cup Rings don't lie.
Goal - Grant Fuhr. As Gretz said, he didn't always have the best stats, or GAA but opposition could never get "The next goal" on him, he shut the door when it was critical. 5 Cups tell the story.

Are you assuming that everyone feels that "Super Mario and The Great One" are the best players ever and that somehow they are in a category by themselves. Unfortunately, in my opinion, you are assuming quite a bit. Neither one of them was anywhere near the all round hockey talent of Gordie Howe. On my list of players I've seen they would not even be 2nd or 3rd although they were good hockey players.
