Lamar's summer job is mowing lawns for a landscaper. His pay is $7.50/hour. He also makes $11.25/h for any time over 40 hours he works in one week. He worked 40 h last week plus n overtime hours and made #339.38. How many overtime hours did he work?

Of the $339.38, 40 x $7.50 = $300 is earned before overtime.

$339.38 - $300 = $39.38 for the overtime work.

$39.38/$11.25 per hour = 3.5 hours of overtime work.

I guess if you need it as an equation, it would be:

40(7.5) + 11.25n = 339.38
11.25n = 39.38
n = 3.5

(And yes, it's not EXACTLY 3.5....but I think that's because:

3.5 hours x $11.25/hour = $39.375...and you can't pay someone a half-penny, so his boss just rounded up.)

For 40 regular hours he gets$7.50 x40=$300
Remaining amount is $39.38
Therefore he had worked extra 39.38/11.25=3.1/2 hours

H=regular hours
O= overtime hours

set-up--- 7.50H+11.25O=339.38
plug in the 40 for reg. hours ---- 7.50(40)+11.25O=339.38
----- multiply------300+11.25O=339.38
------ subtract from both sides----- 11.25O=39.38
----------- divide from both sides----- O=3.5004 <-----answer
