Nobody knows what causes SIDS but it seems lime everyone buys into every theory they have. My five month old died from SIDS and she was on her back. We never smoked around her and did everything they tell you to do and it still happened. Positioning has nothing to do with why a baby stops breathing. Suffocation and is not SIDS so laying a baby on it's tummy to sleep is not going be a SIDS related death if that baby is face down and dies it is suffocation. Same thing with having stuffed animals in the crib or blankets, that is suffocation not SIDS. SIDS is when there is no known cause of death, suffocation is a known cause. I joined a SIDS group shortly after my baby died and was shocked to see just how many of babies died on their backs, or in car seats, strollers, even being held, but there were not very many at all that were on their tummy. They now say using a pacifier will help....well my daughter had a pacifier in her mouth when she died. I have since went on to have two more children and it is a scary thing but there is nothing you can do. If it is goign to happen it is going to happen. Don't spend every second worrying about it or the next thing you know your baby will be a toddler and then once they are toddlers there's a whole hundreds of other things you will worry about happening to him or her, but this definitly is our of your control.

The best way to reduce chances of SIDS, put baby to sleep on her back. DO NOT SMOKE in the house or around the baby as this is one of the main reasons babies die of SIDS. Do not put pillows, toys, or stuffed animals in the crib and do not allow her to sleep in an adult bed.

This is an age old question. No answer has really been given. To lower risks of SIDS, pediatricians recommend not smoking, keep baby on back or side, no pillows stuffed animals or loose bedding in crib, and so on. You can't fully prevent it, but you can help lower the risks of it.

No one really knows what causes SIDS. I read somewhere that in Europe they did a study and found that babies who slept on old mattresses had a higher risk. They said that as the foam in the mattress aged and broke down it released a gas that clung to the area surrounding the mattress and the baby could breathe in this gas. They suggested not using mattress older than 4 years old or one that had been stored someplace that wasn't climate controlled.
