None of those were actually history films. Troy is based on The Illiad...which isn't really history. Gangs of New York was based on a piece of yellow journailism selling sensationalism true crime novel from that era. It was VERY sensationalized. Kingdom of heaven....which was an AWFUL film....is again based on a historical occurence...but I'm not sure I'd call it a history film.

Check out the films Das Boot and Stalingrad....those are history films. In the style of movies you wrote down i;d also check out Rob Roy..which was FAR superior to braveheart.

The Passion of Joan of Arc (it's a French silent from 1928 and is one of the most powerful and incredible movies I've ever seen. It was said that the woman playing Joan, Renee Falconetti, went off the deep end after this film. Look it up on IMDB.com, the story of how this film was lost and then recovered in a mental institution in Norway is pretty cool. It was thought to be lost in a fire and the director, Carl T. Dreyer, had to compose the final version with pieces from the cutting room floor. Even then, it was considered a masterpiece. It was recovered though, and is incredible).
The Patriot
Saving Private Ryan
Goodfellas (it's based on true events and people) as is Casino
Schindler's List
Gandhi
Braveheart
Glory
All Quiet on the Western Front (1930)
Munich
