Respect, unconditional love, understanding, do your best for the relationship at all times, put her needs before yours and vice verse. If you don't get a long with her family at least try, be easy to talk to. Show affection, always talk to each other, tell each other everything even the small stuff. Be handy and helpful around the home. These are just for husbands it goes for the wife too. Like all relationships they continually need work.

As far as choosing a husband, it is not always a question of what is "good on paper". If there is no genuine love there, don't get married to him no matter how funny, rich, stable, etc.
Marriage is a long and arduous journey, you'll need someone that you want to be with, not just the guy who has all the "good on paper" characteristics.
This is not to say that if you meet someone who you find an all-consuming passion for, that he is the one. You can't just trust your hormones. You need to evaluate where you want to be in your marriage. Do you want to be supported financially or share the financial burden? Do you want to travel or not? Do you want to lead a simple life in a simple town or not? If you plan on having children with this man one day, he better be someone you can imagine being a good father to your kids, not just someone you love to share a bed with.
Basically, it isn't just about 'him' and his characteristics. It is about you too and what kind of marriage you want to have.
I would just make sure you marry for love not just a man who looks good on paper.

I would say the most important is to be able to keep a roof over your head and not be a stagnant person. In other words if he can dream and attempt accomplishments then he is a keeper.
If he pumps gas or works as a bagger at the local grocery store dump his azz.

I was lucky and married the man of my dreams the first time : handsome strong silent type hardworking dependable good father material

The most important and most valued quality should be truthfullness. Truthfullness in turn eventually leads to trust and, therefore, making your relationship much more enjoyable and longer lasting.

Total devotion which includes the trust, respect, loyalty issues. Gainfully employed, legally!! But he also needs to be da bomb in bed too. Who needs a dud? Common, be truthful ladies. It matters!!!
