It's a good idea to wait until you at least know what you're having. Also, if you can, wait until after your baby shower (if you're going to have one). After the shower, you can see what you got, return unwanted/duplicate items, see what you have in cash gifts and gift cards, then buy what you need. As for the clothes, don't buy too much, because you'll probably get them at your shower, and get some hand-me-downs as well.

Start when you want to start - if you buy a bit here and a bit there, then you don't get all the cost at once. There are lots of clothes out there that are unisex - onesies, sleepers, etc. There still is no really accurate way to predict what you are having; I'd save the sex specific stuff until after the baby is born. You can buy enough to clothe the baby for the first month or two before it grows out of it all, then buy the other stuff. However, if you find something so cute you can't resist, get it. My mom did that with a little dress once - then got three more grandsons- LOL! Luckily it was only one dress.
I would save the furniture until around month 5 or 6, OR when they are having a really good sale on that type of stuff. Never pass up the sales - they are so worth it.
Remember, all a new baby really needs is diapers, blankets, 7 undershirts/onesies, 3-4 sac sleepers, 3-4 regular sleepers, a hat, ans someplace to sleep- even a drawer or a laundry basket all padded up and made nice works for the first several weeks. And a car seat. Save stuff like a high chair until he's 4 months old, a crib for about 2 months.
But one thing I would say to buy? A baby swing. They are worth it and babies love them. We had a "glider" for my second child that the seat lifted off and became a baby carrier. Two in one and so worth it.

i bought all the big stuff when i was about 6 1/2 months pregnant...if your going to find out what your having buy some cloths...but u get lots at the shower...so it depends if u r having the shower before or after the baby is born...and u can buy cloths that go both ways...they mainly just wear sleepers for the 1st couple of months anyway...Congrats and Good Luck!!!

I would be through my first trimester before I bought anything just incase something would come up. as far as baby furnishings go I would buy the basic stuff and yes buy clothes for either or until you find out what your baby is. Then indulge yourself in the right kind of clothes for it.
Good Luck and Congradulations!

Wait til you past the first three months, as this is the most critical hump to get over. Biggest thing to stock up on is sleepers and diaper shirts. Can get these in white green and yellow until you know the gender. Also your baby furniture is good to get a head start on, especially if you like to go thrift store shopping, never too early to start looking for deals.

You can start buying stuff the day you find out if you want! It is only an old wives tale that you should wait.
Second question.....There are loads of things that are unisex! My boys wore lots of green and yellow jammies and onesies. My youngest son even wore lavender. We thought he was going to be a girl. Surprize!!! I did exchange the pink stuff though!lol
