Target has some cute inexpensive ones, although right now the selection isn't as good for messenger bags as other handbags in general (some are designed large enough they could function as one). During back to school season their messenger bag selection should be better. Word to zappos. You could also try a sports gear store, they often have cute but highly functional bags from quality brands.

AMERICAN EAGLE! american eagle ALWAYS has cute messanger bags... but if all fails, Hollister Co. has really cute totes that sure pass as a messanger bag.
