Does entertainment have the capacity to "ruin" our society? Has it already? If so, can it be fixed?

I think you have a point. People don't understand the difference between hero and celebrity anymore. It used to be that running into a burning building and saving a baby, or defending your country from Nazis or defending the weak where the types of actions that defined a hero. Now heros are simply famous people. Famous people are idolized for no other reason than because they're famous; it's pathetic. Everyone wants to be famous, but not for doing great things.

Since the entertainment industry has such an influence over society, it can, in fact, affect it to the point where you could call it ruined.

The problem is, what defines a ruined society? A society where looks are preferred over intelligence? A society where the goings on of famous people takes precedence over other major stories in the news? A society being famous is more important than being healthy?

The only real way to judge a society is by how the people participating in it act with regards to it. If they generally try to prevent the change then the result of that change can be considered bad. If they try to accelerate the change, then the opposite is true. No matter the change, there will always be someone who opposes it.

Entertainment is NOT ruining America based on this standard. Why? Because nobody is trying to prevent it from doing so and as such, the result of the change can be considered good. I personally don't care for the direction it's going. (e.g. Paris Hilton is rich and got naked... let's give her a television show...)

I don't think the entertainment alone is to blame, but I do think it's sad that so many of us are drawn in and seduced by pop culture to the point where we feel we need to be entertained at all times. Can't we live without 250+ TV stations, cell phones, video games, Apple TV, etc? I suppose if we did, then we would actually have to talk and have deep, lasting relationships with our family and friends. Heaven forbid! ;)
