It doesn't mean the package hasn't been dropped off for departure from the origin. It means USPS didn't scan it, and that is not uncommon. Their tracking is unreliable, and how frustrating for both the sender and the receiver. Best advice - don't assume the sender didn't send the package as promised. Chances are the delay is with USPS. Perfect example: I dropped off a package at my local post office at 8 pm last night, USPS priority mail drop box in the post office, and it's now 6:08 pm **the following day** and absolutely nothing in the tracking system. No scan acknowledging that I'd even dropped it off. My ebay sale ended just hours before my trip to USPS to drop off the package. Very timely on my end from point of sale to payment from the buyer to delivery to post office. USPS tracking is unreliable. Likewise, on the receiving end, I had a book shipped to me USPS tracking. It was delivered today at 1:30 pm to my house, tracking yesterday indicated that estimated delivery date was yesterday with the most recent scan being the departure from origina, but last night the scan updated indicating it was still being sorted for delivery out of state not yet reaching my hometown post office. It delivered today, finally, but no notification in the system (I signed up for email tracking updates), and no update that it was actually delivered when I view the tracking information even now at 6:00 pm. Again, USPS tracking is completely unreliable. Don't make the mistake of pointing blame at the sender. The only thing you can rely on is that (hopefully!) the system will show at some point that it was delivered. And that may be days after the fact. Use UPS or FedEx for more reliable shipment tracking. I wouldn't rely on USPS tracking until after it's delivered. I purchase from Ebay often and have wondered if the people sending my items are waiting a day or two to actually deliver the package after creating a USPS shipping label with tracking information. Now that I'm on the other end of the spectrum, I see that is not the case. The delay is with the USPS tracking system. Completely unreliable as it's untimely to get the delivery notification well after an item has already shipped.

If you purchase delivery confirmation, then you get a tracking number. Otherwise, no, you don't.
