In reading most of the pro-Bush statements on this site, I'm struck by something.
How is it that our men and women in uniform are "protecting and/or defending" us by serving in Iraq?
When was Iraq a threat to us? Ever?
When Bush invaded, Saddam had virtually no military, no weapons of any consequence, no air force, no terrorist allies - in short, no ability to project power beyond his own borders. He couldn't have threatened QATAR if he had wanted to.
So, WHAT are we being "protected" against that our young citizens should die for?

Oh lord - I guess I forgot to include - Iraq was one of the ONLY countries in the middle east which had NO terrorists prior to the invasion. I thought I covered that but apparently not. Carry on.

If it were terrorists, then Syria would have been a good target. If it were terrorists and oil then Saudi Arabia would have been a good target.
One clown said about wmd, 'we know they have them, because we know where they are.' ... still looking? A few were found, but that story faded fast about the same time the photos resurfaced of said clown shaking hands with saddam hussein. Maybe Dick (clown) was the one who sold those to Saddam.

The problem was never really Iraq. The problem was Saddam who thumbed his nose at Bush father and son. Of course the entire situation was exacerbated by 9-11 whereby the Country was looking to son for leadership and the best he could imagine was a costly all out military offensive.
The truth is if we had been smarter and put a price on Saddam's head equivalent to 10% of what we have spent in Iraq to date his own people would have killed him.

I believe the Iraq war was started for more then one reason and not just to protect America from terrorists. I believe one of the primary goals was to take out a ruthless dictator and instate a democratic government in the middle east.
The main threat to the United States and the rest of the world stems from the middle east from radical regimes. The thought was that by instating a democratic government in the middle east would create a catalyst and other nations would follow. Thus creating more stability in the region and less threat to the US. Only time will tell if this will work and if Iraq will ever be a democracy. And even if it will eventually be a democratic nation it still might not be very effective as can be seen with the "democratic" nation of Iran.

Our troops are protecting the Bush/Cheney plundering herd that is over there stealing 500,000 barrels of oil a day, and looting the US Treasury for $3 billion per week. They are police for the private contractors. Bergeman said it well also. Fascists always need an "enemy" for the people to rally against while they go on about plunder and domination. Iraq was always a straw man.

The answer to your question lies in the term 'peak oil'. Look this term up and you will learn that it is the point in which the world will reach the halfway point of oil extracted. Once this happens production will reach a peak and start to immediately decline. This will happen as demand continues to increase buoyed by china and India. You know what this means? Shortages and a major spike in price. Peak oil should by best estimates hit around the next 3 years. Some of the greatest untapped reserves are guess where? Iraq and Central Asia (next to Afghanistan which has a pipeline running through it) Coincidence? People are so ignorant, it frustrates me.

I think we went there to protect ourselves against possible attacks from the Muslim insurgents who were planning to attack us and to help the men and woman Saddam was using as play toys for his and his sons demonic pleasure. He murdered thousands of people not just 149 Kurds. Reports on the news have said they were the most villainous, deranged men on the face of this earth enjoying cruelty to innocent people beyond belief. I for one am glad they are gone and now we must get rid of the insurgents who would take his horrors one step further so that no one on earth is safe from their bombs.
I'm not saying all Muslims, just the crazy fanatics who want to bomb other countries.
