How about... an Iguana? Maybe a ferret? You kinda counted out most easy to care for "fun" pets.

I know you said you didn't want a rabbit, but they really do make awesome pets without a lot of bother. They can be taught to sit up for treats and other tricks. Mine would ring a bell when she wanted to come out and play. They are large enough that you can remove them from the cage without worrying about losing them and they can be very loving and cuddly...mine loved to curl up in my lap and watch tv! In many ways a rabbit is similar to a dog...they can sense your moods offering comfort when you are sad and playing fetch or tag when you're feeling playful. The newer paper litter even makes cleanup a snap. Just something to think about.

Bird
WHY IT'S GOOD Beautiful to look at, and relatively easy to care for. Some can be taught to talk or whistle. Unlike hamsters, birds are diurnal (active during the daytime), so they won't make a racket that keeps you up at night.
WHY IT'S BAD Not as playful as other pets. Many birds like to throw their seed, making an extra mess for you to clean.
NEEDS You'll need to give your parakeet food and water daily, and clean the cage weekly. You'll need to clip your bird's wings to keep it from flying away if you let it out of its cage.
COST Initial cost: $90 ($20 for a parakeet, $70 for a cage and equipment); annual cost: about $40 to $50.
BOTTOM LINE Although not cuddly like cats or dogs, birds are colorful, enjoy being around humans and are fun to watch.

Believe it or not a rat makes a very good pet .They are smart..can learn tricks ..they are clean...really!...and are very affectionate to the person who handles them.Rabbits are very affectionate but not too bright generally.I have cockatiels and lovebirds...they are very smart and can learn tricks and to talk...they will watch tv with you and "help" you with your homework. My son has a pet rat and I had 2 in high school. They went every where with me when I was not in class...they were very sweet. If the thought grosses you out then go for a bird..cockatiels and lovebirds run about $100 or less plus cage and stuff.Look around and you might find one cheap or free along with its supplies ...especially a couple of months after Christmas when parents get tired of taking care of the "kids" new pet.

Rabbits can be VERY interactive, believe it or not.
My bunny played hide and seek with me and the kids! They're only boring when they are left in a cage all day and night. Most rabbits can be litter trained, too, so when you have them outside the cage, you don't have to worry about the carpet.
Another alternative is a relatively young bird. They're snuggly if you get them young enough. They can be fun if you choose one that you can train to talk or make noises.

You might enjoy having a parakeet (budgerigar) as a pet. They can be tamed and taught to talk. I had a budgie called Bobby, he used to make sounds like a ringing bell, and say Good boy Bobby, Pretty Bobby. You can train them to perch on your finger and let them fly around the room. They are a laugh a minute. Check out this link to a story about a budgie named Noddy. Good luck.

Birds can be quite affectionate and interactive. If you get one relatively young and start working with it during the summer, it would make a very nice pet that would not suffer from your long absences but would also notice when you came home. ^_^

Have you thought about a hampster? Or even a bird that repeats what you say or even sings to you in the morning.

I agree with the people who say a rat. My son had one and he loved that guy a lot. They are smart and fun to play with. They can even learn tricks. They don't take up much room and don't cost a lot of money. There's not much for your dad to complain about with that!
