The "wider" one is for an rj-45 connector commonly used on catagory 5(e)/6 network cabling. The normal phone jack plug is called an rj-11.

Basically, your friend is using the wrong cable. An rj-45 can be bought at any electronics store for under $20.

Your friend is confusing the Ethernet port (RJ-45) with the phone port (RJ-11). RJ-45 looks just like RJ-11 except it's wider (8 wires instead of 4)

It sounds like your friend's new PC does NOT include a network interface card (NIC) and thus have no RJ-45 port. However, NIC cards are cheap, $25 at most in Office Depot or Best Buy and such, probably less if you shop around. Some PC's even have them built-in nowadays, so have him look harder and closer. It could be hiding next to the rear USB ports and such.

Worst case: go buy a NIC card and install it, then connect the network card to cable modem.

It's common to have 2 differnet type looking phone jacks. One is actually for a phone or modem (for dial-up service). The larger 'phone jack' - which I believe is an RJ45 port is actually for your internet access (if you were to have roadrunner, you'd plug it in there).

The cable cord should be the same on both ends - one comes from the cable box and one goes into the 'larger' phone jack looking thing. It'll fit..... he may have it upsidedown.

The 'wider' one is an ETHERNET port. You need an ethernet port on your laptop to connect to a router. If you don't have one built in, you can one that plugs into your laptop, generally into your 'pci' port. You probably have one. But you cannot plug a phone cord from your pc to your router.

Your computer needs a Network Interface Card
(pci ethernet card). You can buy one from walmart for $12.95.

If your not comfortable installing the card yourself and do not know anyone who can install it for you, you can take your computer( just the computer, not the monitor, keyboard, etc) to a store like Best Buys and they will install it for you.

It only takes about 2 mins to install a card and another 3 mins to install the software.
