What kind of passport do you need to go from the U.S to London?

Just a regular passport? Or an official passport?

Get one issued by the State Department. Their form will ask you what you want to do in your travels. Then, provide the information asked for, and you'll get your passport.

All passports are "official" documents of the United States government. I went to London a few years ago. You just hand them your U.S passport and they stamp it.
