it sounds stupid but, i was just kind of wondering... im going there next year hopefully so..

NO - the canals are dirty and you would get hit by a boat. - but they are NOT part of the sewer system (at least anymore) . to the south east of venice is the island of Lido which has beaches for swimming. you can reach Lido island from venice via the ferrys(20 minutes) or water taxi.

you can also stay on Lido - there are several resorts

The canals are filthy. You'd be crazy to swim in them.

There's a famous story about Katherine Hepburn, the old movie star. She starred in the movie 'Summertime' and it was made on location in Venice. In one scene she had to fall into a canal while she was taking a photo of something. The local authorities begged the director not to do the scene, but he (David Lean) insisted on it. She did the scene, and that night she got an infection in one of her eyes, which stayed with her for the rest of her life. And that was in 1955.

There is a great movie about a woman who became so ecstatically excited to be in Venice, she jumped into the canals.

No they dont, only the gondola swims in the water

Noooooo....I've heard the water is very nasty and I believe it doubles as their sewer system.

they better not... its quite littered and you might get killed from the boat engines when the garbage boat comes lol
