uh... in 1920s Alabama... it was socially acceptable then... so I think it would clearly be more prevalent... people respond to social pressure... like it or not... in good and bad ways...

I think it is much more prevelant now more than ever because in America (that's where I'm assuming you're talking about) everyone is so scare and paranoid of other races and cultures. It's in the news, tv, movies, and subject of humor, but at the same time people are afraid to acknowledge it in the mainstream, unless you're a comedian.
Back then it was accepted to be a racist but now anyone who has any hatred or racist lives with that secretly or amongst their friends, but that influence is everywhere.
We live in such a PC world, but at the privacy of the home people still harbor their racism and breed it in their children. The other day I met a woman who told her child to play with the vanilla kids and not the chocolate because chocolate ice cream will give you cavaties.
just wait until 2008 when Hilary clinton and Barack Obama wants to be the President. all the resentment towards minorities will come out.

Anybody who actually thinks racism is as bad today as it was in the 1920s has taken leave of his or her senses.
Today, there's no segregation laws. Blacks and whites can intermarry without anybody thinking twice about it. Blacks can eat in any restaurant, sit anywhere on a bus or in a theater, enjoy pay almost equivalent to whites for equivalent jobs.
That's not to deny that there are pockets of residual racism, etc. etc. But compared to the way it used to be, it speaks of astonishing progress.

Overt racism was more prevalent in the 20s. It is still a problem, just not PC, so kept more hidden. In my field (law), I see racism in all races, i.e., each identifiable race is prejudiced in their thoughts and actions towards at least one other race. It is no more prevalent among caucasions than blacks or hispanics. I have found that blacks are particularly racist towards hispanics, even more so than towards whites. Racist whites hate any one of a different color. Just yesterday on National Public Radio, I heard a Mexican woman hysterically ranting because a Guatemalan group of people were "taking over" jobs in a local plant. Truly amazing how racists must find someone of a different color so they can "elevate" their own standing in their simply minds.

Racism is now of course illegal in the public sector.
Whereas before it was publicly acceptable, it very much does still exist but now its just silent and still deadly.
You don't have to espouse the virtues of segregation to be a racist ... racism lives today just as strongly in the hearts and minds of many people, regardless of whether or not it is publicly displayed.

I'm a Yankee, and I'm only 55 years old, so I can't give you an answer from any personal observations. Sure they had Jim Crow laws back then and enforced segregation, so you would think that things are probably less racist now. Still we have not made enough progress yet. That goes for all countries in the world.

There always will be witch hunts and groups of people to persecute. Right now it's the poor Mexicans, then it will be the chinese again.
Currently it's the dead broke fathers that are being raked thru the coals by politicians looking to make a name for themselves. It's curious how a laborer making minimum wage can owe $260,000 for child support, but this is part of the norm these days. Yes, racism exists in many forms and it's worse than ever, we are not progressing, we have failed to honour those who fought for our freedoms.

Well, I'd bet I'd be right If I said you could drive down any street in Alabama and not see anybody hanging from a tree,or any crosses on fire.

There is more awareness. Media is very active. Racism is there but with the passage of time situation will improve.

Oh, my gosh, there is no question that racism is much more rare than back in those days, thank the good Lord!! Hate crime was almost routine from what I've read and watched on television.
