Does anyone have any estimates or any reasonable way of estimating howvmany people died sailing eastward into the unknown before any reached the Hawaiian Islands or Easter Island?

Too many variables and assumption for me to calculate this but historically I believe there is a book by someone who asked the question about Easter Island that is an interesting read.
