Reset The Router.
There should be a small reset button on the router.
When you press the button in you will bring it back to factory specifications.
You will need to re set everything up all over again once you reset the router.

In order to reset the router password please follow the steps stated below:-
1. At the rear panel of the router, near the anttenna, there is a very small round pinhole that contains the reset button.
2. Using a pen/pencil/paper clip, hold the reset button for 20sec. so that the test light starts flashing.
3. After few seconds when the test light stops flashing Power cycle the unit.
4. Open the browser(Internet Explorer or Netscape).
5. Access the router (usually http://192.168.0.1).
6. Login to the router (User Name = admin Password = password
I hope this will resolve the issue.

if this doesn't work see the net gear website to rest the router
http://kbserver.netgear.com/kb_web_files/n100651.asp
the problem with his email and not being able to get to web site other than kids website is probably not related to to the router especially if other computer works OK off the router. It could be problem with content Advisor In IE click on tools Internet options content in the content Advisor section if you see a disable Burton the content adviser had been enable
you will need to disable it
If you see the enable button don't click on you have more problems.
for more infomation on content Advisor see

Physically reset the router with a pin or pencil tip (hold down, plug in the power, and hold for 10 seconds). That resets everything to the factory defaults just like you bought it now.

If I am correct, your pop can't log into his router? Tell him to look on the netgear website for some kind of a firmware recovery tool.

Use a 'bent out' out paperclip to press & hold the reset button behind the hardware, for 10-15 secs. To see where the reset button is located, please view: http://kbserver.netgear.com/images/1484_reset_button.gif
This will set it back to the default username & password:
username: admin
password: 1234
