Don't have a clue about the recording thing---but I'm almost positive that it would have been done by someone---if not an independant person--by a study group or university meteorological team or the like---
Will tell you though
I have had three run right square across me in my lifetime--- one -- the second largest to ever have been recorded---and I can tell you that the sounds (plural) are horrendous !!! And, the craziest part of all that is the fact that you remember individual sound elements WITHIN the thing very definately apart from other sounds that you are hearing --- for years after the thing is history -----years !!!
In the one of April 10th, 1979 in Wichita Falls, Texas at 6 P M at a place called Sikes Senter Mall--- face down and under a bench perminently attached into concrete in the common areas of the mall inside and in front of a Dillard's dept store--- I rode out one that took a full 6 1/2 minutes to pass through with wind speeds clocked at over 500 mph---- the overall sound was that of a jet engine -- or rather-- a pair of jet engines at full bore !! But the other sounds were as distinct as they could be---I heard what I figured out later was the sounds of cars from the parking lot being slammed into the outside walls of the mall like hailstones!!
I heard show window glass ---the really big dudes cracking out of their casings and doing a whooshing sound as they hurled through the air and then shatter against opposing walls ----and screams of people---you'll not be forgetting the screams of those people --- some with VERY serious injuries !!!
But--apart from ALL OF THIS---the oddest thing
Just before this dog hit---and we knew we were going to be hit-- I had seen the thing baring down on us from across a large housing development to the west of the mall through the very large entry doors to the west of where we were-----was about a minute of the quietest --- still ---nothing that I have ever experienced in my life----kinda like the whole world had completely stopped and---------------------just held its breath------then ----BANG-------all hell in a handbag !!!!
So---how loud----I used to do rock concerts for a living---been on stage with some of the loudest of the loud --- Marshall's stacked twelve feet high in a wall from here to there !!! And there was never a night on this gig that there was anything to compare to that 6.5 minutes in hell !!!!!

Its like a vacuum cleaner on your ears. The sound of a jet engine would be a far better simile freight train. Fascinating on TV... FAR too scary when you see it almost on top of you only briefly between each wipe of your windshield blades.

It's surreal... like a dream where you're trying to run away but you're moving like molasses no matter how hard you try.

The sounds have no doubt been recorded, but it can't possibly replicate the real thing.
