click start-->right click "my computer"-->click properties
In new window click hardware tab
click device manager button
Expand DVD/CD-Rom drives by clicking "+" to the left of it

/*repeat point marker*/
Right click on first disk drive, pick one
Click on properties
In the new window you see the following information in the general tab or the details tab
Drive manufacturer, Drive type (plain old CD-Rom, CDR, CDRW, DVD, DVDR, DVDRW, and I believe DVD dual layer would be seen as DVDDL, DVDRDL, or DVDRWDL)
The dual layer capability should be indicated as "DL" somewhere.
The Drive model number is also given.
Usually only in the details tab you can see what firmware your drive is updated to.

Repeat the process from the marker onward to identify your other drive.

If your not satisfied with the information you have available you can search google with your model numbers to find what the drives are capable of.

If all else fails you can call Dell and ask or look at your invoice to find more info there. Also, like someone else mentioned...you can give it a trial and error test with an actual dual layer or single layer disk.

go to
http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/my_systems_info/en/details?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd&~tab=3 on your dell machine, it will identif which hardware you have on your system. if it fails, try to search for Dell Profiler install it and it will show you what you have with your system. look under the CDROM section, if you see something like XXX DL than you can burn dual layer. don't waste money to buy disc just to try it out.

Go to the Dell website, and look up the specs of your system by using your systems model and serial numbers.

That will tell you EXACTLY what is in your system.
