Is there a copyright law that prohibits stores from giving customers refunds for DVDs they have purchased and that have been opened (presumably because they could have made copies of the disc)? If so, does it apply if the DVD is faulty?

ive had to return them before, but the store will only give you the same one back, so it has nothing to do with copyright, it has to do with the store being ripped off

The stores will not issue refunds on opened DVD's and CD's because customers could open them, dub them and then return them, or they could open them, watch/listen to them, and then return them. Either way, unless the item is defective the store will not be reimbursed by the manufacturer/distributor for the item, so they (the retailer) will lose money.

They state that "due to copyright laws" thing because it is illegal to copy/dub something like a DVD or CD, and there is no proof that it was or wasn't done, so they assume it was.

If by chance the CD or DVD is faulty, it will be replaced with the exact item free of charge - with presentation of a receipt (due to the items being available in mass).

Hope this all helps. . .

Copyright law does not apply, but each store and distributor can set their own policies regarding this issue. Some stores require a restocking fee for packages that have been opened.

Check with the store where you purchased the DVD, especially regarding the faulty nature. I would consult their website.

I already know what you're going to do..but anyways.. Yeah what you're doing is a federal crime. It's actually illegal under international law too. Some of the people answering you are referring to the idea of you backing up your own personal dvd collection, but I'm not sure if they realize you're wanting to rent dvd's from blockbuster for the sole purpose of having permanent copies of them at home, essentially purchasing it for the cost of a rental. It does not matter if you sell or give away the copies. Just having the copies in your possession is illegal. Anyways...have fun making your copies..
