Gaydar, just like maternal instinct are alike in that they are both intuitive abilities. Any form of instinct could be classifed together.
My gaydar has become somewhat non existent nowadays due to metrosexuality and homomasculinity.
Now, now I have to rely on my wits, sparkling personality and handsome looks. Dang this curse of mine.

Not in the least. Motherly instinct is probably a lot more actual "instinct". Gaydar is, in my experience, more about just noticing subtle behaviors. And you might not notice you're noticing them (I've only put my finger on some of them), but it's not this magical spider sense. (The ability to pick up on these things, and recognize some meaning from them, may or may not be in part instinct, but I think a LOT of it only other gay people can identify because a lot of it is recognizing in others certain things you do / have done yourself).
Nor, for the record, is it the ability to recognize stereotypes. Sorry, that's not gaydar.

Pick myavatara's answer, that's the best as of yet.
My gaydar is broken. Which sucks because I'm gay.
Both are instincts, so I would suppose so!

I think most mothers are acutely attuned to their children.
I have never disclosed or even mentioned my bi tendencies to my family, have never brought any gay paraphernalia into our home; I am straight looking and acting, and have a pretty good balance of male and female friends. Yet my mother has repeatedly asked me questions over the years that lead me to think she at least suspects my orientation.
