Having respect for yourself means that you have boundaries as far as what you will allow others to say or do to you and what you are willing to do. Most likely you were taught at one point to take showers, so if you don't do that, you are not taking care of yourself or respecting yourself enough to do it. This ultimately affects your appearance and smell and health as well as how others treat you. If you want to be respected you need to show others by appearing, smelling and caring enough to treat you as you teach them to treat you. (Shower) In other words what matters first is how you treat yourself. Having SELF RESPECT! Don't just talk about it, DO IT! Get the idea?

having self-respect means you appreciate who you are and where you came from. you like yourself and you know you are worth something. people that don't have respect for themselves might sell their body for money or not take care of themselves...physically or emotionally. show respect for your body by not just having sex w/ random people...save yourself for the right person...don't expose your body in inappropriate clothing. respect for your mind can be shown by doing the best you can in school and letting nobody tell you can't do achieve your dreams...respect yourself in friendships by being a good friend and a good listener and when your friend tells you a secret you keep it and you don't lie to your friends...always be truthful. Other ways you can respect yourself is by not letting anybody change you...be yourself and do your best.

Respecting yourself means not doing anything that would violate your values or beliefs. People show they don't have respect for themselves by giving in to what other people want and disregarding what is best for them. You can show respect for your body by not having sex with every guy that comes along, and dressing appropriately. You can show respect for your mind by striving to gain as much knowledge as you can and not playing video games all day. You can show respect for yourself in friendships by taking into consideration both your needs and your friends needs, and being able to compromise. In general, you show respect for yourself by having pride in everything you do, and doing what you believe is right.

Respect for yourself means standing up for yourself (don't let people take advantage of you). It means not demeaning yourself to others. Have a positive outlook on yourself and what you can do. Do not abuse your body with drugs or alcohol or risky behavior. Tell yourself that you are capable and can learn anything you put your mind to. Don't let friends belittle you or take advantage of you or talk you into doing dishonest or illegal things.

A professor once told me: "What's the first thing the flight attendants tell you when you get on the plane?" He said, and it's true, that they tell you, " in case of emergency, put the oxygen mask over your own nose and mouth." Why? Because a person cannot help anyone else before he or she takes care of him or herself. It took me awhile to understand, but I now do understand. One must take care of ones self to obtain respect. If this doesn't make sense to you, after awhile, please read Joan Did ion's essay entitled, "On Self Respect." All the best.

Try some quotes regarding self-respect, in order to gain a feel for the concept.
http://thinkexist.com/quotations/self-respect/
“It is the highest form of self-respect to admit our errors and mistakes and make amends for them. To make a mistake is only an error in judgment, but to adhere to it when it is discovered shows infirmity of character.”
Dale E. Turner quotes
“The greatest difficulty is that men do not think enough of themselves, do not consider what it is that they are sacrificing when they follow in a herd, or when they cater for their establishment”
Ralph Waldo Emerson quotes
“True humility is intelligent self respect which keeps us from thinking too highly or too meanly of ourselves. It makes us modest by reminding us how far we have come short of what we can be.”
Ralph W. Sockman quotes
“Self-respect is the fruit of discipline; the sense of dignity grows with the ability to say no to oneself.”
Abraham J. Heschel quotes

By having morals, values, and ethics and sticking to them.
For instance, if you value your freedom you wont commit a crime that may lead to going to prison where you would lose your freedom.
To pay respects to someone means to honor them, or yourself as the case may be. Is getting a nasty tattoo honoring yourself?? Or respecting your beautiful skin in its Natural state?
If you take mind altering drugs is that honoring your natural mind?
I would recommend looking up each of the terms moral, value, and ethic in a dictionary or encyclopedia for more in depth study.
