I am getting concerned about all the break-ins, murders and other levels of crime in my state. I live in a small New England commuittee, and in the last year things are changing drasticly. And I am one who will not put up with this.

You can use a reasonable amount force to effect a citizen's arrest, prevent escape, overcome resistance and protect yourself or others from injury or death. They will judge you based on what a jury of 12 believes is reasonable, with the facts known at the time of the incident. They will also take into account your frame of mind (fear/no fear), and the options you had at your disposal.

If firerms are legal in your state make sure it's registered. The new taser only puts someone down for 30 sec. Plastic pellets too are a good resort(effective ones that don't pierce).

You can only use enough force that is necessary. if you believe your life is in danger than you can use deadly force. But if you are not in danger of having bodily harm being done than you can not use deadly force. Say if you stop a break in in progress and the person takes off running than you cannot kill or harm because you are not in danger, but if some one is your house and you see weapon and believe that you are in serious danger than you could use deadly force. But it good to check on your state and local laws to make sure.
