An uplink port is an Ethernet port connection that allows network hubs or switches to connect to other hubs or switches without a null-modem, or crossover, cable.

Uplink is used when you want to use that port to connect to another switch/hub. Normal is when the port is connected to a computer.

uplink is the port used to bring in a signal and 'route' it to the other ports on the swithch.
