I believe it tends to ease some guilt that people most likely feel if they have any sense of American History. Sort of a "I'm part of your group, so I could never have been related to an oppressor." I am part Indian (a total of 8% of my entire racial background, which is mainly asian and white) but I never bring it up unless for some odd reason it has relevance.

Also, it might be seen as "exotic" to be part Indian, no matter how little you have. That way you aren't "just white" or whatever race. And then there are those that use it for profit. Some people con others with New Age spoofs by saying they are more connected to the spiritual realms thanks to having an Indian ancestor. Or, like my aunt did, tell people she was working to take money back to her people on the reservation to get higher tips. These are just my theories though. I honestly don't know why.

I guess so. I don't do that. I am part Indian, though. I'm also part Black and part Irish. But that doesn't really matter. None of it does. I think the colonists are assholes. I don't think they have a right to be here. (And by they, I mean myself as well.) I guess it does make people feel better, though. I can't tell you why. They are still murders and thieves... the whole lot of them... Shame, shame on us all.

Beats me, we have similar problem in Australia with people claiming they are part aboriginal(Koori) and they were getting back paid by the government for it no DNA test just a sworn declaration.
I'm part Polynesian, Irish, Spanish and if the results of a recent genealogy check is accurate Normandy French.

It makes them feel better about being white.

That or they think you might lend them your card to buy gas.

Maybe they want to get to know you and think that a similar racial background is a good conversation starter.

That or they really are part Indian. I mean, how do you know they aren't? It's not like you can tell by looking at 'em.

Roger I truly believe its because they feel proud that part of them is Indian. I do not think they mean to insult you or anyone. I would see it as a very positive sign that people want that identification with you.

if u mean american indian then i can't share your feeling on the subject. i am like half cheyenne but i dont look like an indian at all. u can be indian and not look like it at all, it just depends on the ancestry in any persons family

Are these people taking something away from you ?
I am sometimes amazed when I make statements like this one that I am wrong . People have many different roots and just the fact that they want to claim their Native American Heritage should make you feel proud of your people . It makes me proud to have Blackfoot blood in my veins .
