Wireless internet question?
I just purchased a laptop and I want to use it wireless from time to time in free wireless internet locations, such as coffee shops, etc. My question is....do I need any special equipment to do that? I know for paid wireless you need a modem/router....but just wondering if anything extra is needed for the free wireless I mentioned.

Thank-you, Amber

As long as you have an internal wireless card or your own external card, you shouldn't need any other equipment. The only thing you may need is a code from the place you are accessing it at because they may have a secure network set up so random people don't just pick it up. But that's free, you just have to ask for that.

All you need is a wireless card and as other answers have stated, it is built into most newer laptops. Make sure you have a firewall though, such as ZoneAlarm, because the wireless access at restaurants is notorious for hackers that can invade your computer and mess with your data.

You need to enable your wireless card. Other than that, most places with free wireless access usually have directions somewhere on how to connect. You could also ask one of the employees there, most of them will know how to connect or find someone who does.

Be careful with your wireless security. If your computer is not adequately protected, you are opening your computer up to hacking and viruses. Keep your anti-virus and anti-spyware software up to date, and make sure you get a secure wireless connection whenever possible.

No, as long as you have a wireless card, which new computers generally have now. You will be able to connect to any wireless network that does not have security on it. If it does have security on it, you will be asked for a password.

As long at your computer comes equipped with a wireless card, either internal, or external than you are good to go, just make sure it is installed properly, and you are given permission to access these wireless points.

And chin, make sure you installed it correctly, it should come with software, install it, and it should work.
