a couple nights ago i was in my backyard shooting beer cans off my fence with an old .44 that was handed down to me when something behind me spooked me, i swung around and saw a large animal coming towards me, and didnt get a good look at it until i accidentally blasted my girlfriends dog. it was a young golden retriever and it made me feel sorta sad. i took the dog and gave it a burial at sea (river behind my house) but i dont have the heart to tell my girlfriend. its been gone for a couple days now and i told her that i think it ran away, she misses it. should i just buy her a goldfish and hope she doesnt ask questions?

I have a question for you... "What do you plan to do/say when the dog's body floats to the surface (due to the build-up of gases from decomposition) and she hears about it "through the grapevine," sees the storey on the news/in the paper or has the bad luck of being present when the dog's body washes ashore?"

Almost everything you mention here is illegal: discharging a firearm in the vicinity of other dwellings (not to mention within city limits [?]), shooting and killing an animal, not reporting it and then dumping the body in the river... You better hope no one heard the gunshots, saw what happened or saw you dump the body because the punishment is likely to be extremely severe: animal abuse and/or killing an animal - whether accidental or intentional - is a felony in most states.

You are going to replace a golden retriever with a goldfish? That's not very nice. Plus, you said you shot it because you saw a large animal coming toward you. Golden retriever puppies are not that big. Are you sure you did not do it on purpose? At any rate, I think you need to tell her what happened and offer to get her a new puppy.

That is the worst thing you can do! You're girlfriend misses her dog a lot and you want to get her a pet goldfish and tell her sorry i shot your dog hope this makes up for it. How could you do such thing?!! That is awful. What if it was your girlfriend that surprised you. Would you go to her parents with an adopted child and say sorry I shot your daughter, here's a new child to make up for it? NO!!! I feel bad for people like you.

Well, if she doesn't mean much to you, keep lying. You'll eventually break up and not have to deal with it. But if she means something perm to you, honesty is the best policy. Otherwise, her question on here might be something like this: "I found out my EX bf killed my dog, dumped the body in the river and lied to me. If I cut the tire stems from all four tires of his pick-up truck and tell his mommy about him wearing women's clothing, is that wrong?"

umm...pretty sure a GOLDFISH will not replace a puppy. that is a sad story -- although i always advocate telling your significant other the truth, i can see how it'd be a really hard thing to do in this case. in my experience though, somehow these kinds of things always come out in the end. i'd say bite the bullet and tell her now. it's kind of cruel to let her think that there's hope of her dog coming back.

you should buy her another dog and say "suprise" i knew you missed you old dog and decided it was a great gift... earn some trust from her...tehn when you feel the time is right and shes attached to the new dog, break the news... adn tell her your really really sorry... lolz.... it will be hard so make sure you have something good to look forward to and/or shes in an ok mood... not too happie because then it will ruin her day...good luck!

LMFAO!
Oh, dude, that is gold, excuse the pun.
How many of us wishes that we could take a .44 and waste our girlfriend's pets?

Seriously though, if no one saw you do it and there is no danger of her going to the river and seeing anything incriminating, you can buy a sympathy pet.
Maybe a small 10g aquarium with a goldfish named Goldie.

go dig the carcass out of the river and wrap it up
for next Christmas. THEN give her the goldfish.
And just for good measure, tell her "I'll get you next!"
