We are a family of musicians and several getting music degrees .. My son is 20 and an excellent guitarist! He likes a little feed back but only sometimes.. not too often.. he says it is a trick for guitarist wanna bees to use to disguise their mistakes. It is better to play clean and shred.. and only use feedback for some occasions.. He is also a guitar teacher.
He plays rock, jazz, flamenco, blues and fushion. He is also a guitar tech!

It definitely depends on the song. My suggestion would be to listen to some good ole fashioned Jimi. He pioneered the use of feedback. Then jump over and give a listen to some of Ted Nuggent's stuff. I personally was never much of a Nuggent fan, but he is the master of what he called "Controlled feedback." And I think that is probably the key. Feedback that you are controlling can sound great. Feedback just for the sake of feedback is a soundtech's worst nightmare and causes audiences to grimace.

Well as a bassist, I'd have to disagree.

When I'm playing during a gig, I ******* hate hearing my guitarist's feedback at the end of the solo. It stops me from hearing my drummer and usually can throw off a whole song..

But if it works well with the solo, go for it, but make sure you let everyone know first.

Feedback can be either good or bad, depending on how you look at it. I personally think that it sounds pretty good if you can use it in the right places, but that's just me. It's really a style thing based on your personal preference, so experiment with it and do what sounds best to you.
