To test scents w/out the dreaded perfume department experience I like to go to Bath and Bodyworks. Personally my favorite perfume is Lucky Brand. It has a nice blend of light musk and sweet smells which make it a good choice for a lot of people. Also to pick the perfect perfume for you, you should pay attention to the natural scent of your skin and try to balance with musk and floral/sweet smells. You should compliment and enhance your natural scent NOT mask it. Good luck.

If you're looking for a great perfume, I am partial to the Very Sexy Victoria's Secret line called 'Sexy for Her.' [It's the first one, in the red bottle, not the pink one.] It smells great. It's a little expensive, but it goes a long way so you can buy the smaller bottle. Also, VS is having their semi-annual, or some sort of sale right now, so everything is really cheap.
If you can't go around testing them you can send someone you know to get a bunch of samples for you with the test paper. But that's my suggestion. One more thing, you could just buy a bunch of magazines from one store and smell them from there...

I switch between wearing 3 different perfumes, all of which I get a lot of compliments for. Here they are in favorite order:
MIRACLE by Lancome
BEAUTIFUL by Estee Lauder
VERY SEXY2 by Victoria Secret
I don't know how you would test them without actually going to the store. Unless, maybe if you call someplace like MACY'S and ask to speak with the manager of the whole fragrance department, she might be agreeable to sending you samples if they're available.
Good luck!

Calvin Kleins "Euphoria" - I'm constantly getting stopped by people (men and women) asking me what perfume I'm wearing?
I'm really kind of sensitive to perfume but love to wear it. I've bought perfumes that smelled good in the store and later make me feel nauseated when it's on my neck and too close to my nose! This one is great as it's very soft and I don't even realize I am wearing it! (But others do! )
Another favorite is Casmir - sometimes hard to find, but also very subtle and agreeable to me.

Angel is very popular but still most people can't place it when I wear it. It's delicious.
Hanae Mori's Butterflies is one of my favs too, seems like nobody wears it, it's baby powdery but sweet and smells like something a baby angel would wear ;)
Max Mara is my off-night scent, it's more musky and mature, at least I think but smells awesome!
