Hi there:)
I'm afraid with a 2 gallon your options are pretty much limited to a betta fish- and I wouldn't even keep a betta in a 2 gallon, but that's my own personal preference.
Someone recommended angelfish- please don't put an angelfish in a 2 gallon tank LOL they need at bare minimum to start, a 20 gallon, and that would need to be upgraded.
But a betta fish- especially from a pet store- would definitely appreciate a 2 gallon home, just make sure you buy one that looks healthy from one of those horrible tiny bowls. -_-
Do the poor animal a favor and give it a nice little home to stretch it's fins out :) And if you have a filter and pump provided, you'll see your betta come to life.
I bought a very unwell looking lone fish from a display 'cup' in Wal Mart. Brought him home, put him in a filtered 5 gallon- voila! Came right to life, what a beautiful fish he is. A lot of people say they're boring fish- wouldn't you be boring to watch in a cramped up little box? :P
Anyway, happy searching!
Hopefully you'll find a lovely patterned fish to take home:)
I hope I've helped you.

I have a 2 and a half gallon tank and I would suggest only a Betta. They don't even need a filter but it's easier to keep it clean that way. It needs a once-a-month filter change and 50% water change at the same time. There is also no need for a heater either. Any kind of tropical fish would need a heater. Bettas are extremely easy and come in many beautiful colors.
I only suggest a Betta because a filter and a heater would take up most of the space in a 2 gallon tank and make it look crowded.

bettas are really pretty and will do nicely in a 2 gallon. and they have pretty colors, and are easier to take care of than most other tropical fish. just change out about a 32 oz bottle of water or so every week and give him some fake plants to live on and a little betta food. you can't put more than one male (pretty) betta in the tank or they will fight and get hurt. most any other kind of fish would at least require a filter and you're not going to be able to put any big fish or more than one of just about anything without overcrowding the tank and stressing the fish. Good luck!

You could have one betta,or a few guppies,or a dwarf African frog. That about covers it.Don't even think about a goldfish;they are very dirty fish, and will have the ammonia content up so high, that a fish would quickly die in such a small tank. You might try a betta and a dwarf frog together,as long as you have a filter on the tank,or the guppies and the frog, but any more would just be too much for a two gallon tank.

A 2 gallon tank is very small. You could have a betta, or a coupld of neon tetras, or a pair of sparkling gouramis, or a couple of zebra danios, or a couple of guppies.
And to correct the above information. Fish do NOT grow to their aquarium size. Most fish continue to grow throughout their life. While it is true that their growth can be stunted by keeping them in an environment that is too small, this is not healthy.

We have a 2.5 gallon tank with one SMALL Oranda...It is okay for now because it is so small, but at some point it will be too large. Choose a fish that stays small. Platys are good ( no more than two ) or even Mollies ( two also ) This size of tank is too small for any more than two 1 inch fish....also they need to be very hardy because it is difficult to maintain water temperature in these small tanks as well.

I have two Oranda Goldfish in a two gallon and I have two Angelfish in another two gallon on my Kitchen Counter. They doing well. I change about half the water once a week. I bought a ten gallon in a yard sale for $5 and it have everything, including the hood. Soon I will set it up and move the Angels to it. Then I going to buy a pair of Kribensis (Spelling?) and put into the two gallon. Just buy a few small fish. Tetras/Guppies or similar size maybe 5-10. Medium fish like sword fish and mollies 2-3. Larger like the angels 2. Buy, large fish as small as you can, they will not grow as much and be OK, but, in time you may need to transfer them to a larger tank. Just pump plenty of air and change water regular. One Jewel Fish is cool too, it kill anything else, so, makes a good loner.

One single betta, and no more. If you are able to commit yourself to weekly water changes, you will find that he (or she) will live fairly comfortably. A bigger tank is definitely better, but a 2 gallon is like an adequately sized apartment if you can keep it at the right temperature and all that good stuff.

Single male betta. They would do much better in a 5 gallon with a heater and a filter though.
NOBODY listen to snagelfritz.....disgusting. The fish keeping hobby does not want nor need someone as ignorant as you. If you are not going to take care of the goldfish and angelfish properly then DO NOT have them. FISH DO NOT GROW TO THEIR AQUARIUM OR BOWL SIZE!

first off... whoever said this is ignorant
"FISH DO NOT GROW TO THEIR AQUARIUM OR BOWL SIZE! " because fish actually do grow according to aquarium size for the most part. gold fish will grow to over 2 feet long in a pond. look it up if u dont beleive me. anyways you dont want much in a tank this small... male bettas r fine and u dont need a filter if u do water changes.. a couple goldfish.. you could have several tetras(neons would be best, and very attractive) you need to be careful not to overfeed anything in the tank though or your water quality will swiftly go down the drain....
