The whale shark is regarded as the largest fish living although there are records of much bigger prehistoric fishes. It's called a whale shark because of its size and feeding habits - a shark as large as a whale but which has a similar filter feeder eating style. The largest specimen caught on November 11, 1947, near the island of Baba, not far from Karachi, Pakistan. was 12.65 m (41.5 ft) long, weighed more than 21.5 tons (47,300 lb), and had a girth of 7 m (23 ft). Whale sharks can get over 40 feet in length. Although they are a shark they are not dangerous and are a filter feeder that feed on krill.
