Uh well, a public address is routable. There are only so many public addresses available on the internet. When you go to a website, you are accessing a public address.

A private address usually refers to a local network address, such as the one you probably have right now. Addresses that start with 192.168.x.x are the most common type of private address. That means no one can access you directly from the outside (at least not without hacking through your gateway/router.

I recommend you look on the following sites and search for "LAN":

LAN = local area network. It's whatever machines are on your network. That is, whatever machines are using your router can be networked together to form a LAN. This would be a private network, behind your router which is also probably a firewall.

The router assigns each computer on the LAN its own IP address, this would be a private address, as it is not accessible from outside your network. These are usually of the form 192.168.1.XX, or something similar.

A public IP address can either be static or dynamic, depending on your ISP. Static means it is always the same, dynamic means that it can change. Most are dynamic, and if you don't know, it's probably dynamic. This is the IP address that your router would receive - or, if you only have a modem connected to a single computer, that computer would get the dynamic IP. The public IP address is the one that is visible from outside your network.

A local area network (LAN) is a group of computers and associated devices that share a common communications line or wireless link. Typically, connected devices share the resources of a single processor or server within a small geographic area (for example, within an office building).

IP (Internet protocol) addresses are basically a sequence of four numbers connected by a dot. for instance: 22.345.678.9. They identify your computer on the web. They are basically a computer's signature on the Web. A Private IP cannot be seen by most people...

LAN is local area network, but basically it's your computer hooked up to whatever other computer is on your nearby network (maybe none).

Some IP addresses are reserved for internal use, like 192.168.x.x, others are meant for public consumption (e.g.: Yahoo is 209.73.186.238). When you get a domain and you want a fixed IP address (never changes) for people to find you, you get a public IP address.

Your internal addresses (usually 192.168.x.x) aren't meant for public use. Most private networks use those numbers, and they're not meant for public consumption.
