Hey, answer #3, wasn't Candide Bernstein? Great song, but...it's Bernstein, not Sondheim.

Oooh, good question!

-Writes his own lyrics, too
-Respected by critics and the public alike
-Best line from a musical possibly ever: "It's YOUR fault/No, it's YOUR fault/and it isn't mine at all!" (Into the Woods)
...3 points, Sondheim

-Who needs critical acclaim when you make a bazillion dollars a year?
-Recently scored a major TV hit with the reality show "How do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?" where English viewers chose the new lead for the West End revival of "Sound of Music"
-That's LORD Loyd Webber to you, Bucko
...oooh, it's a tie!

Final verdict? Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Witness the following lyrics from musical parodists "Forbidden Broadway"
(to the tune of "Memory"), as sung by their version of ALW:
"Hate me!
People instantly hate me!
Alan Lerner once told me,
'It's because it saves time.'
Sarah Brightman and I once planned to conquer the world....
Disney,
can you spare a dime?!"

Webber's a poser. I can hear strains of JC Superstar all over Cats. He writes some nice music, I guess and hangs his hat on some big themes sure to be hits.

Now, Sondheim .... I think I could say West Side Story and settle the argument right there, probably the finest piece of work (I know he just did the lyrics) of musical theater ever.

Just listen to....
Soon/Now/Later from A Little Night Music
Pretty Lady from Pacific Overtures
I'll Steal You Johanna from Sweeney Todd
Every thing's Coming Up Roses from Gypsy
The Best of All Possible Worlds from Candide

Spanning decades Sondheim has been consistently Brilliant and Unique, while Webber spews out tired re-worked motif's over and over again.

"Oh My GOD, it's Stephen Sondheim!" -Camp.

I think that says it all. There is no comparison. Sondheim is a god. Webber is great, but really just wrote shows for his wife to star in [until they were divorced.] I mean, I'm sorta joking about that, but it's also sorta true....A million points to one, Sondheim wins!!

I might must say C-Webb ... He can beat shaq off the dribble and has bigger variety..... Don't omit shaqs sloppy dribbling...that might make for less complicated steals that result in elements... I say webber wins 10-eight
