I think John Lennon meant that people can be close minded and shut their brains off to new ideas and thoughts.
So yes, it's very easy because so many people do that.

It's easy to go through life with a closed mind ignoring the troubles of the world, but when you open your eyes and see the struggles everyone else is facing as well it put thing into perspective.
