59 years. The Hobbit is the story of the finding of the ring and Bilbo's adventures during this time. If you read the introduction to the Fellowship of the Ring it says, "He returned to him home at Bag End on June the 22nd in his fifty-second year (SR1342), and nothing very notable occurred in the Shire until Mr Baggins began the preparations for the celebration of his hundred-and-eleventh birthday (SR 1401). At this point this history begins." SR by the way stands for Shire Reckoning or the hobbits calendar if you haven't read the book.

If you read the books it is like several years. Because in the Hobbit...Bilbo is younger then what he was in the Fellowship. The books are great...it has been several years since I have read all of them. But I do believe it was several years. In fact where the movies seem like they are just weeks the whole journey take a matter of years to destroy the ring....and even in the end it goes into more depth when the hobbits return.
