you could also check My Network Places, assuming Windows OS. If you're networked, the other machine will show up under Workgroup Computers.

what networking system are you using?
GUI (windows)
or
DOS (Command line)

start -> run type in 'command' hit ok
type 'ipconfig'
do this on both computers. from the second computer type
ping (ip address of first computer) hit enter. if it works, you did it
