Okay, so I want to audition for a play at my school but in order to do that I have to have a song. The only problem is that I have no idea about what to sing. I really don't have that high of a range so I can't sing things like "Breaking Free" from A High School Musical without bringing it down an octave (I'm a tenor). So if anyone has any suggestions that would be great. Thanks for your help.

There are a lot of factors in choosing a song to best fit your voice. You're a tenor, but what is your actual range (low E to middle C, for example). I'm a soprano 1, but i can sing from low D to high F, a three-octave range, see? Knowing your exact range would help limit what you can sing for the tryout. Then, what range is your best sounding? Are you a soft low ballad type of guy or an upbeat "Grease Lightning" sort of guy? Which type of voice is the play looking for? With more detailed info about your abilities, you'll get much better feedback.

I would recommend something like "Music of the Night" from Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera if you need a ballad, or Josh Groban's "You Raise Me Up", which is a good voice showcase because it has a wide range of pitch and tone. If you need a swinging, upbeat tune, I recommend "76 Trombones" from The Music Man, a fun and well-known tune.

Good luck!

"Giants In the Sky" from "Into the Woods." It's perfect for a tenor and sung by the character "Jack" from "Jack & the Beanstalk." If sung well, it shows great vocal range. Break a leg at your audition!

What about something like "Luck be a Lady" from Guys and Dolls? That's a great song, upbeat and fun, and easy to find. I have the soundtrack, and would be happy to email some songs from it to you. If you want, you can email me through here, and I will respond with the songs.
