They feel it's a victimless crime and try to justify the loss to the store as a corporate right off, so the store can afford this.
Stores also pay wages that kep people in jobs, they pay leasing fees and taxes like the rest of us.
Stealing hurts everyone!

Although not popular in the United States, studies have linked various medical conditions to certain kinds of behavior. Some experts believe shoplifting to be closely linked to a deficiency in Vitamin B6. Twenty years ago, as an attorney, I was approached by a minister whose parishioners were merchants in a small town with a private boarding school. The students were polite, religious young people, and the merchants were reluctant to report them to police, but complained to the minister about their shoplifting. The school served only vegetarian meals. As vegetarians have learned more about vitamin requirements, I understand the problem no longer exists there. However, other causes of B6 deficiency exist, and anyone, especially a person not in dire need, who finds himself or herself shoplifting should see a physician about whether to be treated for vitamin deficiency .

ask Winona Ryder? ha ha who knows they want to get away with something? Or they want the product and cant pay? It is still stealing. Not like food if you are hungry. There is no money and no good paying jobs for the average person, they barely have enough to pay their food bill, let alone shoes, pants, shirts, etc.,
Taxes are so high, rents are going up, mortgages are outrageous, and gas just went down, cars, insurance, medical ins. co pay. This world is pricing us right out of existance. The human life is worth nothing nowadays, insurance companies wont pay on your policy if you have a pre-existing disease? What sense is it to buy insurance?

Because they know that stores are rich and have their own ways of scamming costumers so why not just scam back? For example, the hundreds of millions of dollars of never used gift cards the stores made a nice little profit on.

I can't help but think is has to do with our deep, deep desire to commit a crime simply to see if we can get away with it.
Shoplifting is one crime that, right or wrong-- we feel hurts no one; And if we're caught the penalty might be relatively light.
Just a thought.
