My neice is 20 years old and for the past 2 years, she has not gotten a period and has severe abdominal pain a lot of the time. She has gone to the ER several times because of this pain and has not gotten any answers. She had chlamidia 4 years ago and was treated, then her paps were normal until last year she had HPV and had a leep procedure done, she had a pelvic infection about 4 months ago and was treated. She had an ultrasound which did not show anything and then the pain persisted so they did a laparoscopic investigative procedure which I guess did show some endometriosis which was removed. She says it all started about 2 years ago, when she got a hormone shot 2 months in a row to get her period to start. It had stopped then because she was a cheerleader and also on a dance team and was very very skinny. After she had those hormone shots, thats when she says it really screwed up her body. Any advice? She's worried she'll never have kids:( Thanks!

She has gotten more than one opinion and no one can tell her what's wrong. She isn't underweight anymore, actually she gained a lot in the past couple years, and her stomach is always bloated....her friends tease her that she looks pregnant. As for using protection....believe me, I have already had that conversation with her!!!

She has an extensive pelvic history and there could be a myriad of reasons for her current amenorrhea, ranging from genetic abnormalities to endocrine disorders to psychological, environmental, or structural anomalies. Given her history of Endometriosis, STDs and pelvic infection, and hormone therapy, it would be hard to estimate the actual basis for her problem without clinical intervention by an advanced reproductive professional. However, things like premature ovarian failure (often accompanied by hot flashes, breast atrophy and decreased libido); excessive weight gain or loss; Asherman's Syndrome; cervical stenosis; Polycystic ovarian disease (aka PCOS); hypothyroidism; hypothalmic disease; use of certain medications (including hormonal and pyschotropic/pyschiatric); and/or a hormonal imbalance could all be to blame and are worthy of further investigation. Endometriosis can also complicate things; the adhesions and inflammatory, hemorrhagic lesions of the disease can create a hostile pelvic environment and lead to menstrual difficulty, chronic pelvic pain, abdominal bloating and many other (often debilitating) symptoms. There is no absolute cure for Endo, and it is unfortunately more likely than not that she did not have all her Endo treated (i.e., through meticulous excision), as most gyn surgeons simply ablate it from superficial locations and leave massive amounts of disease behind. A visit to a gyn who specializes in pelvic pain and reproductive endocrinology is a good first step in getting answers and hopefully treatment; she needs a thorough workup with not only physical but lab findings as well. Fertility and pain relief will be dictated based on the underlying diagnosis and whatever treatments she embarks on. There is much that can be done to assist with fertility issues in this day and age; the important thing is that she get her problem(s) addressed once and for all and is able to regain her quality of life first. Good luck.

Um that sounds pretty serious, and she should really see a Gynecologist.....If it continues, she might not be able to have children. She might be under weight so that's why she could not be having her period, or some other serious medical problem.

Well i understand her concern. She took the hormone shot unknowingly. Those shots are not healthy. The surgery probably caused scar tissue in her uterus. Its truly is only God who can decide whether she will ever have children.

If she is already seeing a gynecologist, I strongly suggest getting a second opinion somewhere else. She needs to see a specialist and soon.

Is it possible that she may have cancer?

Not trying to scare you, but have you talked a specialist about the possibility?

As for the children, I honestly don't know. Tests can only determine if she is still fertile.
