Easiest way to find out is go to http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner/

The processor doesn't really matter so much as to how much memory you can run.
However, as far as I'm aware the maximum WINDOWS 98 / WINDOWS ME can handle is about 512MB, while WINDOWS XP HOME / XP PRO can only handle up to 1GB (1024MB) of memory

This depends on your motherboard. Not only will the specifications tell you how much memory you can max out on but also what kind and what combination. Failure to observe this will cause your computer not to even boot up. If you don't have your manual you need to email hp-compaq and let them know your model # and they should be able to identify your motherboard and its specifications.

Only way to find out is your manual or the motherboard manual.
Unless you're using it as a production server, you don't have to worry about it. All you need max is about 1Gb. That will work for most applicatiions and games.

Pentium 1, 2 or 3 ??
Either 64MB, 256MB or 512MB, depending on the systemboard.

that's still not enough information, but you can find this info. in the owners manual. usually, those things carry about 2.5 or 3 gigs.
